Jewell Galloway Scroggs, 93, a Clay County native passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 in her adopted hometown of Fairfax, Virginia, following a brief illness.
Jewell was the daughter of the late John Roy and Lona Audrey McClure Galloway. She was the devoted wife of Keith Scroggs, also a Clay County native, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles P. Galloway; and sister, Lillian R. Galloway Kelly.
Jewell had a distinguished thirty-year career as a Military Personnel Management Specialist for the Department of the Army. She received several honors, including the Commander’s Award, for her dedicated work serving our soldiers. Additionally, she was a tireless advocate for her husband and son. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening, and watching baseball on television. Jewell never lost her small-town heart; she never knew a stranger and touched many lives in Northern Virginia with her generous spirit.
Surviving are her only son, John Keith Scroggs and his wife, Anne; and her grandson, Keith Franklin Scroggs, all of Fairfax, Virginia. She is also survived by her niece, Marianne Kelly Godin and spouse, Steven M. Godin; nephew, Steven Kelly; brother-in-law, Joseph G. Kelly; as well as several great-nephews and nieces.
The family received friends from 10:00–11:45 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville. The interment followed at 12:00 p.m. at the Hayesville United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Kirk Hatherly officiating. Pallbearers were Keith Franklin Scroggs, Paul Hedden, Bobby Rogers, Paul Buckner, and Carlton Etheridge.
