Evelyn Gibson Farmer, 82, of the Tomotla Community, Marble died Sunday, May 30, 2010. She was a native of Centenary, SC, but had lived in Asheville for 14 years before moving to Cherokee County in 1974. She was a graduate of Limestone College. Evelyn taught elementary school in Buncombe County and Head Start in Cherokee County. She was a very active member of the Tomotla United Methodist Church where she had served on numerous committees. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens and attending to the needs of her community.

She was the daughter of the late David Franklin and Mary Stanley Gibson and the wife of the late Kenneth B. Farmer, who died March 11, 1992.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Hughes and close friend, Kim Shepherd of Tomotla; a son, Ken B. Farmer Jr. and wife, Beth of Black Mountain., NC; a sister, Martha McMillin of Mullins, SC; three grandchildren, Dustin and Ashley Hughes, and Alex Farmer, and a great grandson, Jadyn Furgason.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 2 in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Rev. Nathan Finsel officiating. Interment was in the Tomotla Community Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Robert Stillwell, Ben Joyner, Ethan Dickey, Larry Murphy, Shane Moore, Matthew Barton, Bill Vespasian, and Richard Martin.

The family received friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in loving memory of Evelyn Gibson Farmer to the Tomotla United Methodist Church, c/o Alene Keener, 297 Hayes Rd., Marble, NC 28905.
